reading: The Time Traveler's Wife

The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger
this book is simply amazing. the plot is a bit of a mind-fuck, but seamless and totally original. the concept of involuntary time travel as a disease or a genetic mutation or the next step in the evolutionaly process is fascinating. the characters are real enough that they made me laugh and cry as though i knew them personally. audrey niffenegger's descriptions of people and places and events are very sharply visualized--i think it absolutely shows that she is an visual artist using words as a medium to paint a story. i have mental images of some of the events in this book that i know i will keep for a long, long time. and when nearing the end, i simply could not put his book down. i finished it at 2am this morning. i don't want to say a lot about this book's details--hard to talk abut it without giving things away. but i DO want all of you to read it. it's one of the best books i have read in years!

one side note: does anyone else find the book group questions they have stated including in the backs of books nowadays annoying? why is it that the publishers assume i can't understand this book well enough on my own to come up with decent discussion topics without being led into them by the nose?

I found your blog by a little random clicking, but I'm glad I stopped by. We appear to have a lot in common - even the three kitties, lol! I will put this book on my TO READ list.

I'm glad you liked the book. :) I think Brad Pitt's production company bought the rights for a film version, but I don't think they've started production (or maybe even casting) for it. It will be interesting to see how the film turns out!

Thanks for de-lurking. I'm really pleased you enjoy the blog. I read your profile with interest; the words eclectic and reduced bullshit tolerance certainly ring bells. Do come back.

I loved this book. I've been recommending it to friends for over a year and no one is ever disappointed. Living in Chicago and knowing where everything referred to in the book and having been to several of the places made it even more alive for me. I love this book so much that I'm actually listening to it on cd right now in my car.

The film will be very interesting. Kate Winslet is rumored to be playing Clare.

The funny thing is I still miss Henry and Clare. That says a lot about these characters.

Did you find it hard to "get into it at first"? I was a bit distracted while trying to read the first bit and then lost steam. I will try it again after hearing such good reviews. Kristin

kristin, i would say that the beginning definitely moves slower than the end, but i didn't really have trouble getting into it. maybe it's just my kind of book.

it will certainly be interesting to see what they do with a film version! kate winslet would be awesome, but WHO will play henry?! and who will play clare when she is young--as meredith and i were discussing yesterday, that could make or break the film.

well, once i finish all the bullshit that is due in the next week and 1/2, i will certainly give it another chance since it comes so highly recommended. :-) i tend to find one author and voraciously read everything s/he puts into print...making it hard to get used to new writing styles. maybe i could try to read it without the 3yr old version of spiderman (or biderman as it is pronounced at my home) running about.
