somewhere around 2pm on saturday i learned from the hippie that i needed to make something to bring to the party we were going to that night. (after i had been to the grocery store, of course. and after he let me believe for, oh, about 3 weeks, that the party was a dinner party and not a party party. this is because he is a man and therefore not capable of social preparation or planning. but i digress... besides, i think i've already covered that.) so, i decided that i would get around trying this bourbon pecan pie recipe i've been wanting to make for over a year. the recipe is from the recipes from home that i've mentioned a few times in the past, and like everything else i've made from that book, it was pretty awesome. it's the kind of pecan pie that has chopped up becans in it instead of whole ones, and it has just a touch of bourbon to give it a little zing. the crust is flakey and buttery and just a teeny bit sweet. i highly recommend this and will definitely make it again. endorsement: this book also contains my standards for pumpkin pie, apple pie, and chocolate pudding as well as the recipes i use to make roasted chicken and cumin crusted pork chops. after the pie was ready to go, i made belly buttons for the hippie. i had never heard of these until i met him, but it's what his grandmother always did with leftover pie crust dough--you just roll out the dough, brush it with melted butter, sprinkle it with cinnamon and sugar, and then roll it up and cut it into little slices. bake it alongside the pie. kids and hippie's love them!
in other news, it's SLEETING outside. what the hell??!
also, i have no time to knit today in spite of the fact that it's cold and rainy and i have NEW YARN. this is just not right.

Do you think it hurts the feelings of your "old yarn" to hear you rhapsodize about the "new yarn?" All of your yarn was new once. Love the yarn, Jackie! Just because some poor skein is buried at the bottom of one of your nine hundred yarn caches makes it no less special :) PS--This weather is sucky.
That pie looks awfully tasty. Could you send me a piece? :)
we just got a supply of belly buttons from the gma:) nothing like pies and bell buttons. love~pseudo-mom
First: IMHO there is no "sucky" winter weather. Even sleet. Cannot suck.
Second: I address a similar "man" issue on my own blog today under Daddy's section. Stated as delicately as possible considering that he reads my blog. *sigh*
Your little pie crust leftovers are a tradition in my family. My mother always made a little extra crust so we could have extra "dum dums." Even when we owned the restaurant and mother came in to bake all the pies every morning, she would always put up a few sheets of dum dums and they were free to our customers at breakfast.
Can't tell you how pleased I am that you make them too, but now, you know their proper name.
Hurrah for dum dums!
We are freezing down here in N. Florida so at least I won't mind cooking for the next couple of days. And, just in case I don't get back here before Thursday, Happy Thanksgiving, Jackie and Mr. Hippie.
Count Your Blessings
PS...
W4D says he likes the name "Belly Buttons" better than the name dum dums. LOL! I am just so tickled that you make these. I want some with a good cup of coffee, right now! Instead, I will suffer with my wine and popcorn. Feh.
i missed the sleet? and the pie?! and most importantly ... you have new yarn that i haven't seen?!
be safe on the road tomorrow. i saw lots of hp's on monday, and saw two people get zapped yesterday, and one zapped today.
i don't know, laura--seems sucky to me when it's cold and sleeting and the wind is blowing, but if might not be so bad if i didn't have to drive in it!
flaurella, belley buttons is a WAY cuter name than dum dums! besides, dum dums are those little bitty lolly pops to me.
and gray--you HAVE seen the yarn--just not at my house. i got some purle misti alpaca with which to copy your ribbed cable scarf! (that old yarn will just have to get over it, em!!!) no worries--you'll get some pie (you too, meredith)--the season has only begun...
Poor yarn...lying about on the front porch like some gray-muzzled old dog, just LONGING to be petted and loved. Knowing your compassion for just about every animal on the earth, I just can't believe that it doesn't extend to fibers that originated from some of those same amimals :) Happy Turkey Day if we don't talk today. PS--You're missing the cat show.
